Bottomline - California Mexican rather than true authentic, but that's worth overlooking in this case. Great vibe, great food, fabulous salsa bar.
Lucha Libre Taco Shop is two things more than anything else - 1) A Mexican wrestling gastro-mecca, and 2) California-ized tacos taken in a wonderful direction.
The Mexican wrestling thing might seem gimmicky, but they actually take it serious here. There is a roped off gold "table of champions" which requires special reservations, TVs showing Luchador films, a floor to ceiling wrestling photo, masks, etc. It's almost like a mini museum. The menu even says they'll cater your event in wrestling garb, masks and all. If you think all that is fun, it is. If you think all that is weird, it is. Either way it's worth grabbing a taco here just for the experience.
The gourmet tacos shouldn't mistaken with some sort of "Top Chef" hipster silliness. By gourmet they mean signature creations with new ingredients. For example, the Tap Out Taco - Grilled Chicken and vegetables, melted/grilled cheese, avocado slices, and creamy poblano sauce. These special tacos won't ever replace my beloved Mariscos German or Tacos El Paisa street tacos, but they are a delicious change of pace.
The salsa bar is a step above most taco shop offering. Six salsas, all out of the ordinary, plus pickled carrots and peppers. I actually found these to be wildly different that what I've had anywhere else. So be sure to grab a little of each and try them with the free chips. some I like, and some I don't.
Also available are TJ style hotdogs - Bacon wrapped hotdogs with ketchup, mustard, mayo. Not really my thing, but they are popular.
The taco prices are much higher than you'd expect at some taco shops, but they are worth it. One taco with the chips and salsa makes for a very filling lunch. I tried eating two of the gourmet tacos on my last visit and could barely finish. I would rate the value as very good.
This place will normally get packed at lunch and there isn't a lot of seating. So either avoid the lunch crowd or expect some crowding. Parking is easy in the lot next to the liqueur store.
