There is a problem with doing taco shop reviews all by yourself. Unless you want to make yourself sick or throw most the food in the garbage, you are generally only going to try 1-2 things. How do you know whether the place is any good from just a couple tacos? Such is the dilemma I find myself in here. I've only been here once, and only had the adobada mini tacos.
So I promise I'll be back, and this review will be dancing around a lot of unknowns.
First of all, don't let the shop's proximity to Old Town scare you off. This place isn't touristy at all. It's a local taco shop through and through. No parking to speak of, very limited seating, and a mom&pop vibe.
As to the tacos, they were delicious. Overly charred as you can see in the photo, but that didn't translate into a charred taste. I think of charred marinated pork fat as an ingredient on it's own. There was plenty of that. Plenty of spice. Fresh and tasty toppings. While certainly not among the best I've had, these were head and shoulder above the typical strip mall adobada tacos.
But.... I have this lingering doubt, thus the promise to come back and try some other things. First of all, the majority of reviews I've seen rave about the breakfast burrito and rarely mention anything else. And I get the impression their other tacos are the crispy type, and they had more of those than the yummy mini tacos. Several menu items are listed as "beef" or "chicken", not a good sign.
Still, all of that is speculation. The food I had was great.
Free chips, limited salsa bar. Tables were a bit sticky, but not gross. Good portions, doubled tortillas.
Its a shame you haven't tried
Its a shame you haven't tried the breakfast burrito. Okay, its pretty standard as far as ingredients go, but its the technique and the quality of the food that's so good. My personal favorite is the chorizo burrito (I live right around the corner from Dos Brasas). The chorizo has the right amount of fat but isn't greasy, and is properly browned.
On the same note, Dos Brasas was partially responsible for my friend gaining 25 pounds when he worked for State Senator Dede Alpert's reelection campaign back in 2000. Every morning he would cross the street to Dos Brasas and get a special breakfast burrito (eggs, choice of meat, cheese and potatoes).
At some point I'll be caught
At some point I'll be caught up enough on reviews to get more specialized. Best breakfast burrito, best fish taco, best mole, stuff like that. Until then I'll be going by more authentic menu items. But it will all be here, sooner or later.
